Bringing a new kitten home is exciting, but one of the first things you’ll need to teach them is how to use the litter box. Luckily, most kittens instinctively know what to do, but a little guidance can help ensure they form good habits from the start.
Not all litter boxes are the same, and for kittens, size and accessibility are key.
✔ Low sides – Kittens have tiny legs, so they need a box with easy access.
✔ Right size – A large box can feel intimidating, while a very small one may not give enough space.
✔ Uncovered box – Some cats prefer open spaces rather than covered boxes, especially when they're young.
The type of litter you choose can affect how comfortable your kitten feels using the box.
✔ Unscented, clumping litter – Many kittens prefer softer, sand-like textures. Avoid strong fragrances.
✔ Avoid pellets or crystals – Some kittens don’t like the feel of larger litter granules.
Cats like privacy, so put the litter box in a calm, low-traffic area where your kitten won’t be disturbed. Avoid placing it near their food or water, as cats don’t like to go to the toilet near where they eat.
When you bring your kitten home, place them in the litter box and let them explore. You can gently scratch the litter with their paws to show them what it’s for.
✔ Do this after meals and naps, as these are common times when kittens need to go.
✔ If your kitten starts sniffing or scratching the floor, gently place them in the box.
Cats are naturally clean animals and won’t use a dirty litter box. Scoop out waste at least once a day and completely change the litter every week or two.
Most kittens learn quickly, but if accidents happen, never punish them. Instead:
✔ Gently place them in the box if they go elsewhere.
✔ Clean up accidents thoroughly with an enzyme-based cleaner to remove any lingering smell.
✔ Reward them with praise or treats when they use the box correctly.
If you have a large home or multiple kittens, place a few litter boxes in different areas. The general rule is one litter box per cat, plus one extra.
If your kitten refuses to use the litter box despite your efforts, it could be due to:
🚩 Medical issues – If they strain to go or avoid the box entirely, consult a vet.
🚩 Litter preference – Try switching to a different litter type.
🚩 Location issues – Move the box to a more private area.
With patience and the right setup, your kitten will quickly learn to use their litter box, making life easier for both of you! 🐾
